Roofing Nail Tariff News [6/03 UPDATE]
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Roofing Nail Tariff Update
June 03, 2019
Dear Valued Customer;
As one of the largest and oldest direct importers of nails in the USA today, CMI has been providing our customers with quality products, timely deliveries, as well as the most up to date and accurate information to help support running your businesses effectively.
Tariff update as of 5:32PM on May 31st, 2019
Background:
On May 10, 2019, the office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) implemented the previously delayed 15% increase in tariff for the Section 301 List 3 goods. The total tariff on those listed items is 25%. May 10th is the effective date but only for shipments leaving China as of that day. If a shipment left prior and arrived by May 31, 2019 it will be assessed at the 10% tariff rate that was implemented on September 24, 2018.
Updated information:
On May 31st, 2019 at 5:32 PM the United States Trade Representative’s Office (USTR) announced that the USTR intended to publish a notice in the Federal Register this week that would extend the amount of time for China imports to enter the US from China before the goods will be subject to the additional tariff increase from 10% to the proposed 25%.
The intent of this notice is for the covered products that were exported from China to the United States prior to May 10, 2019 to remain subject only to the 10% tariff if they enter for consumption into the U.S. prior to June 15, 2019. This extends the time frame for goods shipped prior to May 10th, 2019 to enter the US, from June 1st to June 15th to remain at the lower 10% tariff level.
There still seems to be a lot of confusion even with customs brokers and CBP; we are monitoring the situation carefully to make sure you are not charged any tariff cost that is not accurate. Below is a link to the announcement of the proposed extension.
Going forward:
CMI will continue to be transparent regarding the treatment of tariffs. We provide a separate line item listing for the tariffs allowing our customers to see the impact and how we apply the tariff only to the FOB cost. We will not hide the charges in the price of the product. If the tariff ends up being less, our customer pays less. If it ends up being zero at some point, then our customers would pay zero tariff.
Thank you for your continued support, and please feel free to call us if you have any questions at all.
