“New Tariff Discussion” – As we move into 2025, we have heard that there is a potential for new and/or additional tariffs on many products entering the United States from other countries.
Dear Valued Customer,
Background
It is our ongoing goal to keep our customers informed of changes regarding the nail market and our industry and any actions that may impact your business, both in the short and longer term. As with current and previous tariffs there may be many products that could be affected by an upcoming new or updated tariff. The latest tariffs that were implemented included thousands of items, most notably, nails and related construction items coming into the United States.
Tariff Update Announcement
While we don’t know specific items that would be affected at this time there is good chance that additional items could be added to the current tariff list and that there may be additional tariffs for those items already impacted by tariffs. It has been suggested that tariff details could be announced in the third week of January, 2025. It is hard to guesstimate at this time what a new or updated tariff may look like. There has been talk of 10% additional tariff to 60% to 100% tariffs on some items.
How to Plan
Going forward we will continue to provide information regarding the tariff situation. The tariffs may affect many items you buy for your business. Implementation of any tariffs occurs shortly after a detailed announcement of the products and tariff amount and does relate to container entries into the United States after a specific date.
Going Forward
Current nail quotes for imported nails include the current established tariff amount. In the spirit of continued transparency, we will continue to quote all tariff-applicable nails with tariff, and if any future/additional tariffs are implemented, that impacts those orders, they will be included as well when invoiced. In the event that tariffs are reduced or removed, we will also adjust them accordingly.
CMI will add any ‘tariff cost’ as a separate line item on invoices and only charge the applicable tariff rate in affect at time of shipment entry. The tariff amount will continue to be calculated based on the FOB cost of material. We will continue to be transparent regarding what the amount of the tariffs and the impact to your total cost.
