ILA and USMX Reach Tentative Agreement, Averting Coast-Wide Port Shutdown

Dear Valued Customer,

Abington, PA (01/25) – Just in! The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX) have reached a tentative agreement on a new six-year master contract, narrowly avoiding a potentially crippling strike at ports along the East and Gulf Coasts.

This last-minute deal, announced late Wednesday evening (January 8, 2025), comes after months of tense negotiations, a brief strike in October 2024, and a looming contract extension deadline of January 15th.

Details of the agreement are not yet public, but it reportedly includes provisions on wages, benefits, automation, and job security – key issues that had led to the previous work stoppage.

Why this matters:

  • Economic Stability: A strike would have severely disrupted supply chains, impacting businesses and consumers nationwide. This agreement ensures the continued flow of goods through vital US ports.
  • Labor Relations: The deal signals a resolution to contentious issues between the union and port operators, potentially setting a precedent for future labor negotiations in the maritime industry.

What’s next:

Both the ILA and USMX need to formally ratify the agreement. The ILA will meet with its Wage Scale Committee and schedule a ratification vote for its members, while USMX members will also vote to approve the terms.

This news comes as a major relief to many, as fears of a second port shutdown loomed large. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
